Bunaken Island, Indonesia (16-24 March 2012)

After a week in Bali I decided it was time for diving. There are two top locations in Indonesia: Bunaken and Raja Ampat.

I decided to go to Bunaken, for price and flexibility. To go to Raja Ampat, flights are quite expensive and also you need to book a package of 7-10 days diving. Since I didn't know how long I wanted to stay I went for Bunaken.

Bunaken is an island located on the North of Sulawesi. It is part of the Bunaken National Marine Park. To get there you flight first to Manado and then catch a boat to Bunaken Island. There is a government boat that goes everyday except Sundays. The other option is to arrange a boat with the resort you are staying in Bunaken. I took the second option and the price was 10EUR (low season).

I stayed in the Sea Breeze Resort, which has its own dive center. For more info you can go to www.bunakendivers.com

My first idea was to stay 3 days diving and then see something else in Indonesia, but when I went to this resort, I knew this was where I was going to stay my last week of holidyas.

The small resort with around 18 bungalows is located just in front of the sea. The restaurant/bar is just over the water with beautiful view of the surrounding islands.

I went in low season and pay 35EUR for a seafront bungalow including the 3 meals. Food was very nice!

The best thing of the resort is the atmosphere. Starting with the owners Terry (an Ausie) and Diana (from Indonesia). The staff are so friendly, like “Ronaldo”, who is always with a big smile organizing everything. They are such a nice people! I was lucky and I made a few friends there: Chris and Afka (lovely couple of Dutch divers), Tom (german travelling 8 months in South East Asia), Silje and Marek (norwigean and german, she is working with orangutans in Kalimantan), Elisabeth and Daniel (just holidays) and Susan (Dutch girl one month travelling). We made quite a nice group of divers and we shared experiences and louds of laugh!

If you like diving this is one of the top locations in the world. You have beautiful Coral and loads of fishes. You can see sharks (white and Black Tip), huge turtles (bigger than in Mexico), strange creatures doing Muck Diving, giants clams (1 meter long), etc. I was diving all the week except one day that we did a trip to the jungle!

I paid 55EUR two dives, including equipment in good condition. The staff working with Terry is very good. Great dive masters: Demsy, Dolpy, Jimmy! One day coming out from the second dive we had a tropical storm. Waves were huge and captain of the boat with his crew were very professional sailing safely the boat back to the island!

It was a pleasure to meet you all in such a nice spot of Indonesia. Special thanks to Terry for being such a nice host and keeping the beer real cold!

Hope to see you soon!
